Thank you to all who participated in this years Par 3 Challenge. We had a blast hosting, like always!
Despite our best efforts there is no amount of planning that can guarantee perfect playing conditions. We had hoped by doing it early in the summer we could beat the heat and ensure you better greens. Which, we did. But as the week of our Par 3 Challenge approached the weather projection had us questioning if there would be a Challenge at all. It had been forecasted for over a week to rain, thunder, and lightning basically the entire length of the tournament. However, in true Washington fashion, the weather forecast was one not to be trusted. The downgraded day-of forecast didn't hold either. There ended up only being a measly momentary drizzle, which blew through as the last two groups were finishing up.
Although everyone made it through the day safe and dry, the storms' wind still came to play. It without a doubt made itself known and that it had no intention of leaving. The wind’s chilly bravado had each participant questioning their skills and had them unsure of how their scores would fare. “With wind like today it’s hard to tell [what the ball is going to do]. The wind can pull it whichever way.” But, how does one compensate for such strong wind? The game plan that seemed to be favored was, "Just get out there and whack it! And hope for the best!"
Despite the wind's attempts to slow people down, many actually did really well. Balls were making it to the greens and sticking. People were still laughing, cracking jokes, and even dancing as they jammed out to some pretty excellent playlists. “That’s why we are here; to have fun!” (R. Russell) and when you are playing for fun - being silly is par for the course. Russell's group went as far as putting one of the greens with their drivers...It was not only fun and silly, it was downright comical.
Many participants knowingly forwent their drivers, since their distances are too long for most of the Par 3's. But a few unfortunately found themselves rummaging for their balls in the swamp between the 1st pin and the 5th fairway. “GladItalkedmyselftogototheiron!” Several individuals even brought their rangefinders to better gauge which clubs to use. A piece of trivial knowledge that might be useful in your next game, especially if you find yourself overshooting the greens, “A lofted club will make it go up and come straight down [making it stick the landing]. But your distance will be shorter.”
Winning prizes is without a doubt an awesome incentive to play in our yearly Par 3 Challenge, but we hold this tournament as a way to bring our community together. It isn't about who can win. Even the most seasoned of golfers are still learning and honing their skills, so if you’re a novice don’t let that discourage you from participating in next year's Par 3 Challenge. You might just surprise yourself with how well you actually do! You don’t know if you could win your division or one of the many KP prizes unless you try!
For those of you who came out to play this year, it was an absolute pleasure seeing all of your faces out on the greens. For those who did not or could not come this year we do hope you join us next year.
This was our 6th year holding our Par 3 Challenge and we are overjoyed with the support we have received. Every year we have strived to have more sponsors than the year before and this year we finally had all 18 holes sponsored with KPs! We are incredibly grateful for all of our sponsors, because without their contributions it would be just another day of golf.
Prizes will be available in the Pro Shop by 4:00 PM on Monday the 17th. Please come in and pick it up.
Please do return the favor. Our proud sponsors and their prize winners are:
